Shock absorbers and struts (used on vehicles with strut-type suspensions) often last the life of a vehicle. The clearest indication that you need new shock absorbers or struts is that your car keeps bouncing after going over a bump or dip in the road. Springs absorb bumps, and the shocks and struts are “dampers” that control the bouncing afterward. Shocks and struts can be damaged by road debris, develop leaks or have worn mounting bushings that allow excessive suspension movement or noises.
